Understanding Penile Cancer

Penile cancer is a rare form of cancer that can affect any part of the penis. Uncircumcised men, especially those with a history of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), are at much higher risk of developing penile cancer compared to men who are circumcised. Most common type of penile cancer is squamous cell carcinoma.

Symptoms

Penile cancer may present with the following symptoms:

  • Abnormal penile lump, sore or skin discoloration
  • Distinct penile skin redness
  • Enlarged groin lumps or lymph nodes
Diagnosis

Diagnosis of penile cancer generally requires a physical examination and tissue sampling (biopsy).

Imaging in the form of CT scan and/or MRI are often necessary to determine the extent of cancer involvement of the penis as well as of the other parts of the body.

Treatment

There are several available treatment options for penile cancer such as circumcision, Mohs surgery, topical medications, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and partial and total penectomy (removal of part or entire penis).

Choice of treatment is largely dependent on size, location, extent of cancer involvement and patient individual preference.

More aggressive cancers may require a combination of different treatments to maximize effectiveness.

Similar to other cancers, close monitoring is highly recommended after treatment to detect any recurrences that may arise.

Penile Cancer FAQs

How can I prevent penile cancer?

One of the best ways to prevent penile cancer is by practicing safe sex. Sexually transmitted infections like human papilloma virus (HPV) is a leading cause of penile cancer. Undergoing circumcision, especially in younger years, may be protective.

Is penile cancer curable?

Yes, penile cancer can be curable, especially if detected and treated early.

Will I lose my penis?

Fortunately most penile cancers are caught early when they are small and not invasive. Minimally invasive methods are often sufficient for effective cancer treatment. Penectomy is seldom required.
