Understanding Groin Pain

Groin pain has many different causes. Some of these causes may include hernias, muscle strain, testicular torsion, testicular trauma or injury, testicular infection, post surgical pain, referred pain from lower back, the hip or from an actively passing kidney stone.

Symptoms

Depending on the actual cause of the groin pain, other associated symptoms may include:

  • Swelling of the testicles or scrotum
  • Fever
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Discharge from the penis
  • Blood in the urine
  • Burning during urination
  • Frequent or urgent urination
  • Abdominal pain or constipation
Diagnosis

Establishing the cause of the groin pain may involve obtaining a history, urine and blood tests, testicular Ultrasound as well as performing a physical examination. Sometimes a CT scan may be required as well.

Treatment

Treatment will depend entirely on the cause of the groin pain. This can include prescribing pain/anti-inflammatory medications and/or antibiotics, referring to other specialists and even considering surgery.

Groin Pain FAQs

When do I need to be seen for groin pain?

If you experience an acute and sudden onset of groin pain that’s not improving, please call your doctor right away or go straight to the nearest Emergency Department for further evaluation.

What are the most serious conditions causing groin pain?

Testicular torsion (lack of blood flow to testicle which may lead to testicular death if not addressed promptly) and strangulated hernia (decreased or lack of blood flow to a portion of bowel stuck in the hernia may lead to death of bowel if not addressed promptly).

What can help improve pain in my groin?

Anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen, scrotal elevation and application of ice to the area may help alleviate some of the discomfort.

Serious conditions do need to be ruled out first before these treatments are instituted.
