Hydrocele refers to fluid accumulation around one or both testicles. This can cause scrotal swelling and/or discomfort.
Causes of a hydrocele may include testicular trauma, testicular infection, testicular cancer, inguinal hernia, previous inguinal or groin surgery such as hernia repair surgery, vasectomy and varicocele surgery.
Hydrocele typically presents as an enlarged scrotum and may result in a feeling of heaviness and discomfort.
Diagnosis of a hydrocele is typically made by physical examination and Ultrasound of the scrotum.
Other imaging studies such as CT and MRI scans are rarely used but can be obtained in certain circumstances.
While some small inflammatory hydroceles may resolve on their own, many others will not and may require treatment if they are bothersome.
Treatment options include drainage or aspiration of the fluid using a needle inserted through the scrotal skin and hydrocelectomy. Needle aspiration technique, while minimally invasive, has a higher risk of recurrence. Hydrocelectomy, while more invasive, has a lower chance of recurrence and involves making an incision in the scrotal skin, opening up the collection containing the fluid, evacuating the fluid and excising the wall containing the collection.
If you suspect you might have a hydrocele, please contact your doctor or consult an urologist for further evaluation.
No. Hydroceles do not always require surgical intervention. If the hydrocele is small and asymptomatic, it can be safely observed.
