Scrotal swelling is relatively common and can occur for a number of reasons including testicular cancer, epididymal cyst, hydrocele, inguinal hernia, infection/inflammation and testicular torsion.
Diagnosis involves obtaining a combination of patient history, physical examination, urine and imaging studies. Most common imaging study performed is a scrotal Ultrasound. If more information is desired, a CT scan can be obtained as well.
The treatment for scrotal swelling will depend on its etiology.
For instance, infection of the testicle or orchitis, will most likely require an antibiotic to treat, whereas hernia, hydrocele, epididymal cyst, testicular torsion and cancer will likely require some form of surgical intervention to address.
If you have noticed scrotal swelling, the first thing you should do is contact your doctor. You can start with your primary care physician or directly contact a urologist.
The most common cause of scrotal swelling in an adult is a hydrocele (fluid accumulation around the testicle). When large and/or cause symptoms, hydroceles can be surgically repaired.
